A serious blog post seemed to need a serious repose phase. While sticking my head into philosophy books from morning to evening, doing nothing but recovery over the weekends back à Berlino, it needed a trip back to Paris to fill my head with life sense again. While this whole city still stinks like your average kebap snack bar toilet, it keeps my creativity flowing like no other so far.

So, what's new?

First, of course, the BeatportPlayer. keeping viral marketing on track. It was obvious (because rather easy), that somebody would come up with this. That it is (again) not an European company executing the idea(while the big majority of clients are supposedly from here) is a shame, but also doesn't surprise. Too bad Beatport doesn't let you choose "category-free" from their whole range, but I guess they needed to leave some arguments for the industry. Anyway, dope stuff, distributor pleasing supplier as well as customers.

Secondly, there opened a new club in Berlin. If you've read the corresponding media in the last months you might have heard, that a few discothèques are supposed to (re)open this spring. On top of it all is without a doubt the Tresor, which will reside in a power plant facility on the crossing line between Kreuzberg and Mitte - as seen from the Bar25 or on this year's Bread&Butter. Here is a "Recall"
Last saturday the "15th floor" opened at Alexandeplatz. Located in the same house, headed by the same people this is surely to be seen as a "WeekEnd" amendment. The plan is to make it a little harder, less tourists and Düsseldorf/Monaco di Bavaria, more content, more for the home-crowd.
While my trust into Berlin nightlife is slowly dissolving for a couple of months now ("exceptions prove the rule" as we say in German), last saturday's lineup (samydee, audio werner) could be a light at the end of something. Yet I doubt this will be anywhere near a serious Panorama Bar option. On verra.

Trois. it took me much too long in life to find out about Abaude. shame on me.

Fourthly. I saw some nice shorts at the Berlinale. Highlights in my eyes were "Decroche" from France and "Mei" from the USA/Taiwan. Both scored the Silver Bear.

Fünf. Today I seriously thought about, if Kiehl's could enhance life-quality. whatever.

Six. If my plane from Geneva arrives in time on saturday night, I might make it to Festsaal XBerg.

So, what's new?

Berlin is tryin' to shake off the good old provincialism again.
finally we're all des petits cinéastes?
The Berlinale surely is one of the better festivals, though I don't see much sense in standing in line for hours for a movie which
a. you don't know anything about at all and
b. you can easily watch in a couple of months as well.

But I guess it's that cinema feeling. "the big screen, and the amazing 3D sound, y'know?"
Above all this points the center of attention on some content for a couple of days.
Which brings me to yesterday's FAZ Berlinale insert from thursday feb 8th. One of the best printed matters I've gotten into my hands recently - full of truth (only in German, sorry!).
(btw: why this country sucks, Vol. 33)

Paul Schrader (taxi driver, raging bull....) about a probable film-canon of the 20th century, i.e. about the criteria/categories of film itself. a must-read if you think you care about cinema. here.

Furthermore, go watch "Brick". Finally young ~~american~~ californian cinema becomes interesting. Even though the story is set-up in the usual and quite boring suburbia high-school (donnie darko etc. pp.) context, which seems to be somehow admired by most non-americans - probably for it's seemingly adventurous daily-life experience. While this trivial surrounding makes it a lot easier to construe appealling characters in the script, it's really one-dimensional and surely overused, which makes it very boring in most cases.
Here is an exception, since the writer/director has managed to add enough (still not too much) fictionality, i.e. horror, to make it a good film story. maybe a little too american for an old european.
But in addition "Brick" shows great camera work, not only as far as technique but also concerning the narrative element of photography. Truly following the De Palma mantra "form is content". Overall more 'how' then 'what', which is the way ~~it's supposed to be~~ we like it.

Closing 2006 and naturally thinking about James Brown, I remembered that I had put up these great videos of JB, Sly and Richar Prior full of coke on live TV in last february. here. Funnily or sadly enough this was one day after I had written a post about the passing of Jay Dee / J-Dilla, without a doubt the finest hiphop producer of the late nineties and a major music influence growing up. here.

It's strange but the year ends as it has begun, everything going in circles. I wouldn't go as far as comparing these two musicians (since there wouldn't be any hiphop at all, any pop music as we know it,if it wasn't for James Brown), but as far as my greatest musical influences, both artist would surely be seated in the front row.

So as for Jay Dee - "the musical mind behind tons of great productions from people like Slum Village, The Pharcyde, Common, ATCQ, De la Soul, Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes et al......." - BBE (his label) put out a new video some time ago. With a bunch of cameo rap stars jumping around in the back, a nice song and a beautiful video (yeah, you like the balloons), I find. The looks, the music, that good J-Dilla feeling. "Won't Do"

after a heavy start, this weekend ended with a quiet ~~and heavily needed~~ fade-out.

Within the process of gettin back into the hiphop loop, I've ran into the few but beautiful R'n'B diamonds I possess. For me D'Angelo has always been the only modern "slowbeat" artist, which managed to combine precision and emotion. Like in the good ol' times. I think "Voodoo" is the only full Soul/R'n'B album I ever bought. And one of the few things I got on CD for a reason.

I still remember putting the CD into the player and being nailed to the sofa for approximately four hours, fascinated by this wonderful music, that used Jazz-patterns (as well as great musicians like Roy Hargrove, Charlie Hunter or Karriem Riggins) in such a modern context. A rare incident, where pop, beauty and quality are not contradictory.

gotta give some credit to my Sweden trip. I am a lazy ass; it's been two months and I still haven't dropped a line about this. So here it goes.

Thanks to easyjet, Copenhagen Airport (hot hangout spot I heard) and that crazy bridge they built, I made it to SouthWest Sweden in early september.
So, swedish people are basically always friendly, always know how to dress, they love social justice, all the girls look goodUpToSuperHot, many know electronic music better than a lot of people that DJ in Berlin and they throw with money at you, if you don't look good enough.
Go figure yourself, what's not true.

If you wanna know what's up and dance a lot, travelling to Sweden is not a bad idea.
Everybody loves party, sex, norwegians (opposite sex), style and a lot of booooze.
I was lucky enough to have the perfect escort, taking me to crazy house raves, delicious dinners (believe it or not they actually put up the IKEA table alltogether (!) right before dinner) and a fine nuit blanche in Copenhagen.

The press (more in English here) is going crazy about some rioting going on in the Wrangelkiez , Berlin, right in front of my door step.
Actually I do live right where the German media locates the center of all evil, i.e. corner of Wrangelstr. and Oppelnerstr..
Seems that the trouble moved right with me from Paris.

No, seriously. All this is pretty ridiculous!
This is obviously not Bel-Air nor Grunewald, but it is far from Ghetto faboulous, even if police and media on the one side and the little ghetto boy(s) on the other side would like to have it that way.

First, I know about eight people that live not more than 10 minutes away from here. Nobody (most of them passing the crooked streets everyday), being it boy or girl, ever had a serious problem. As long as you do not seriously try to have trouble or run around with two money filled Longchamp bags on each arm, you shouldn't have any trouble. Of course this is not the safest place in town. And obviously you should rather considering moving here or here, if you wet your pants as soon as somebody does not fit into your good person/bad person scheme. And, criminal incident, clashes with the police do happen, but everywhere else as well; in addition this does not reflect a social problem-pattern, which people - who have nothing else to talk about - would like to see. I still think that, despite all the media hype, this is one of the few places in Western Europe where integration IS really working. I get a better service and more friendly faces in the Turkish supermarket on my "evil" streetcorner than in every other grocery chain I've been to in this town.

Secondly a lot of Berlin's subculture intelligentsia recently moved here or is about to do so. More than half of the best-known clubs are right here, resulting into a quite vivid nightlife, which wouldn't happen if people got stabbed every other weekend. Just look at the cafés and restaurants on a saturday afternoon and you'll see that this is by far not Clichy-Sous-Bois.

Thirdly the comparisons with the French riots even made by non-yellow-press newspapers is nothing but stupid. This does not fit content-wise, since the whole social structure as well as history of this part of the town is totally different. It is one of the centers of the cultural life in Germany. Secondly the riots in France have a deep socio-political background, mirroring a deeply divided society (in case you read German, you might wanna read my little commentary to this in De:bug 99). Germany does have problems, but of a very different manner, being a country differently organized and grown than France.

Finally this proves once again that we are living in a surrounding best described by the German term "Mediokratie" (in English). In the three months living here, I haven't seen one robbery or stabbing in front of my doorstep. In the last week I see camera teams and pen&pad journalists on a daily basis. It is disgusting to see, how 14year old boys (obviously with the way they are socialised, begging for attention) are put in front of a camera , having no intellectual/educational capacity to give any other answer than they are expected~~, directed~~ to give. This is obviously the media looking for a story, not the other way around. The heavy media coverage is just another way of shifting the blame. If it's a certain district, a certain people, "it can't be me!" Don't blame a neighbourhood, blame society as a whole, blame yourself!

Usually I am not posting aniversity stuff, cause a. who cares? b. most of the time nobody'd get the stuff anyway and c. students suck big time (especially in Germany).
here is an exception. In any case this is only interesting for you if you live in Berlin and speak at least a little German.

My university, the HU Berlin, holds the so-called Mosse Lectures every semester since 1997. They consist of five lectures over the course of the semester, where rather well-known intellectuals speak about a certain subject. I saw/heard Daniel Barenboim about two years ago, which still holds to be one of the best experiences in my student life. Further speakers in the past were Daniel Liebeskind, Ivan Nagel et al.. I decided to post, because this year's subject is already outstanding itself. It's "Verlierer" (German= "Loosers")! Finally an astonishing as well as cool lecture subject and definetly worth a try-out. Here is the speakers list. First lecture just got postponed from Nov 14th to Dec 19th.

No place to hide. The internet reveals it all. Remember the times, when only you and your friends knew about that hot new record (well, at least it existed reasonable motivation to hold on to that illusion)?
Not today! Especially the personalization movement (i.e. myspace etc.) has done a good job not in adding variety (content-wise) but rather in disclosing relations. Summed up, this doesn't mean more quality - I've to admit, that's what I thought/expected too in the beginning - but more open paths to the good stuff, being rare as it's always been. No marxism here, but, true capitalistic growth by raising productivity still doesn't apply to good (sub)cultural matter.
anyway, before I get too much into philosophy, I come back to the reason for this post. After I've seen so much blog-name-dropping in the last week, especially here in jermany, I've decided to give out some infoe as well (since I think only friends are reading this anway..........yet...). Instead of some tiny linkage here and there, why not make a list (yes, why?) - no special order or claim for completeness and truly subjective:

people with exactly my sense of humour work at the TurnTableLab warehouse in BKNY. though they should seriously stop bitiching about each other on the company blog, this still is one of the most entertaining websites. Not only do they like to combine random boys stuff (sports, girls, girls and girls) with the best info about modern art(s) but they are also sitting right at the source of the American subculture, being the first to see that new book, try the new piece of powerbook equipment or listen to the new releases.

let's stay in New York. Following the life of Ellen, a quasi-and-recently-but-not-really-ex-model, doing documentaries at the moment ~~and looking a little bit like Rachel Weisz,~~ can be real fun from time to time. The pictures are great, the stories mostly weird and overall Ellen just seems to be a nice person with some good taste. In the end you can see that life in New York and as a model, is not much different from anywhere else, as long as you have an honest self-perception and great friends.

And yes, me too, I think the TAPE guys do one of the best blogs regarding electronic music on the planet. On the one hand they are just totally honest with their music and party addiction, which makes them likeable and you can somehow identify with the stuff. Secondly they just have an incomparable good taste when it comes to new Electro/Techno/Minimal/Dub/Disco. That, the simple layout and their impudent download policy have brought them numerous good contacts in the music biz (just check the recent Heidi interview) in their very short time of existence (I recall not even a year, but please correct me if mistaken). Geeta Dayal lived in Berlin for a couple of time, where she wrote very interesting articles for German über-techno zine Groove amongst others. She has moved (back?) to New York, where she now works for Wired, Village Voice et al. often portraying the German Electro Scene for Amerika. Finally this is somebody who REALLY KNOWS what she is talking about. Somebody who really cares for the music and is still able to put it in an intellectual context without exagerating. I still recall that I eventually realized that the Internet IS the greatest invention in the last fifty years, when she put up that post about Synapse, an electronic music magazine from the seventies, happening to do some Kraftwerk interviews back then (here). Unfortunately there haven't been any posts in a month, but I still hope for more.

Finally from Paris (and a little London I guess) are the Fluokids, from which I've "borrowed" the title for this post btw. In English et en francais these 7 young kids strive to be the continental allsexistape with a corresponding bigger focus on the look of their site. I am not always into their taste, but the podcats still belongs to my few abonnés in iTunes. And if you don't like the music , the frank interviews and especially the veeeery nice pictures, which they put up for every second post, will for sure make up for it. Rave and Style get together from a rather childish perspective. Oui, Oui, on s'amuse bien.

yes, I do miss Paris. walking the streets, just for the beauty of it. but even though Berlin is dirty, ugly and definetly totally overrated ~~by most of the people here~~, it provides a certain freedom especially at night, that is hardly to find elsewhere.

last weekend came up with such another night.

after a delicious Schnitzel Dinner,
at some Vienna friends' house in Mitte,
where you met some French from Madrid,
as well as people from Hamburg,
who just moved in from London,
or are workin' in Frankfurt all week,
ending up at a somewhat privat party,
at a totally not privat location,
(dropping a rather common German name "that invited me" at the door,
should have been enough to get you in)
by coincidence meeting very good friends there,
that were somewhat invited,
though by a differently named host,
getting totally hammered,
dancing your ass off,
on a sauna like 30 square feet backyard dancefloor,
with the probally shittiest soundsystem in town,
and a room temperature of approximately 40 C°,
leaving at an unspecified time,
with people you had never seen before,
though they knew your friends (which were long gone),
though they had just gotten to know them that night,
stranding at another party,
set in art nouveau baths,
- while here at the latest you didn't care about anything anymore -
where most of the people had already left,
but of course one kept dancing,
getting some fast food in dawn,
walking the streets of Prenzlauer Berg,
while chatting about old French movies,
taking that train ride home,
which doesn't seem to end,
crossing the bridge from east to west berlin in the morning sun,
trying out your new cell phone's camera,
reaching home,
falling into bed,
watching some live Formual One from Japan,
answering E-mails,
listening to music,
dazing,
sleeping all sunday.

Tomorrow (september 28th)"The science of sleep" ("la science des rêves" / "Anleitung zum Träumen") will start showing in German cinemas. I think it did already run in France and I guess the same goes for the US.

Anyway, if I ever recommended spending the 7 Eurodollars on a cinema ticket, IT'S NOW. GO SEE THE MOVIE. It's Michel Gondry's fourth big movie production (after "Eternal Sunshine...", "Bloc party" and "Human Nature") and the first one that plays in his hometown Paris.
First it has all the typical formal Gondry ingredients, shown in his numerous music videos. That is, no special effects in the old-fashioned way but more handcrafting like taped ribbons, wool, paper cars and so on.... While this style never really appealed to me aesthetically (the reason why I've never been a real Gondry fan) it lays the perfect ground for a wonderful story.

"The science of sleep" is a story about the importance of the subjective perception. But it talks not only about the importance it has for daily life (decisions, behaviour etc.) but also about it's strength. It talks about what a single mind can do, move, achieve in the world if he/she truly believes in his dreams. Furthermore, and here comes the most appealling part for me, it portrays the tragic of women, men and everything happening in between, in a very true and sensitive way, and in this very special manner - by mixing dreams and reality, individual and objective perception - comes a little closer to the question why people (need to) fall in love. It is above all a very honest film, maybe not regarding the way the world looks on the outside but within each single one of us. In the end maybe that is the reason why it is one of the most touching movies I've seen in a long time. Here's the trailer:

the new nike vs. johnny cash mash up on TV (here) reminded me that their last spot in the air series seriously blew my mind. Though you could see that ad 24/7 on all TV channels, it still fascinitates me. No satisfaction there. Beauty.

The spot is directed by Joaquin Bacca-Assay who did DOP (camera) for Thumbsucker and Jay-Z's "99 Problems" (directed by Mark Romanek).
The very last shot starting with the reflecting water is simple a plain and awesome idea looking at the spot’s concept; same goes for the idea with the headlong camera.

I (had) found out that the music was exclusively produced for the clip. by humanWorldwide.

So no downloading there. You might use the Quicktime export function for iPod supply.

as announced a little "miami vice" review:

Above all one of the best Michael Mann movies. While the story is not as thrilling as "Heat" for example, it is smart and good entertainment. Here, the suspense lies not in the story but far more in the picture of nowadays' society, nowadays' communication and nowadays' relationships. It is (as often with Mann) much more an image he paints than a story he tells. The image he paints is above all up-to-date . There are little actual movies I know, where you have such a feeling of seeing the present and not things as they were five years ago or as they are supposed to be watching TV.

Naturally I do not talk about speed boats, undercover police and big ass guns. Without a doubt all not part of daily life. Much more I mean the way people talk and behave. The two sex scenes belong to the honest I've seen in an action movie. The two main characters are full of doubts about what they do, how they act and foremost themselves. On top they live in a world which doesn't leave them much to orientate especially considering love and moral values.

In any case - and even if you don't like the image described - it is worth to buy the cinema ticket at least for the mélange of action/special effects and HD hand-camera photography on the big screen.

so finally back in Berlin. Moved in, got situated, feelin’ allright.

First Berlin(er) weekend behind me. Due to a guest from abroad, I saw a couple of venues in a very short time again. Icon, Weekend, Panorama Bar and WaterGate, all in one night. Figure yourself in which1ne we didn’t get in. En tout cas quite a roundtrip and we put the check on one of the havetoseeifyouvisit point. It also helped getting the conclusion that you’ve moved to the right spot, when you can pratically fall from the dancefloor into your bed in the morning. So no more long-distance or weather excuses for not going out this year. impressions:

Saturday, still quite dusty in the head, we hit the Party Ganz unten/Blog Party/Party unterm Alex. For those who don’t know here’s explanation & pics from last year. I’ve to admit that this was not only the perfect thing to visit with a Berlin nightlife tourist, but also overwhelming if you’ve lived in this city for a longer time. Won't forget the about 40 year old father we met while having a break above on one of the “unterführung”-exits. Sweating like hell, a 7 year old girl on one and a 5 year old boy on the other hand, he came out of the underground looking for the metro. “Once again through these chaots…….with the kids??” he asked after we gave him directions for the metro station. Fortunately for them we found an above-ground solution. The party was going strong, till the “flicks” busted the place. Just found some new photos as well. again:

After all I think I’m glad to be back, though Paris is worth missing. In these few days, there have already been enough coming up to write about. Just saw Miami Vice yesterday night. But more about that later….

While realxing on the train back from London last weekend (by the way, Eurostar rocks),
I read two articles in the actual issue of TaNK, which I found worth quoting:

the first is a very good "critique" of the situation on drugs in the UK today, written by Bernard Hare:

"Drugs are endemic at all levels of society. Britain is addicted to drugs as surely as America is addicted to oil. from time to time i am lucky to find companies/agencies with a rather reserved outward appearance but an amazing work portfolio.

paranoid projects is a small french production company founded by the poiraud brothers (didier and thierry poiraud). formerly known as entropie films, they've just moved from paris to l.a.. most of you have probably seen stuff from them around.
what makes their work so astonishing, is the constant quality of their output. while they only work with a handful of directors, that group includes people like wong kar wai or dutch-french special effects virtuoso jan kounen. they do rather traditional commercials for peugeot but also work with video artists like play airways from toronto. check their showreel on the paranoid projects site.

After the Sneaker Hype seemed to have been calmed down a little over the winter, here come some guys with a special focus.

I doubt the "originator" aspect they claim for the Air Jordans - lookin' at this for example; but, without a doubt all the Jordan buzz is one of the major influences if u are born in the late seventies / early eighties.

interesting article in "texte zur kunst" gossip issue. you could certainly tell of the gawkeretc. impact on journalism in the last month. nevertheless i am surprised to hear this has reached these levels. probably shouldn't - be surprised i mean.

anyway, the web 2.0 takeover has certainly been discussed enough. i still doubt that there might result some real "volonté" ouf of this. just too little mass-media approach. no bottom-up. but the other way around. which is again proven by the affect on the art-scene described below. which doesn't speak for the scene (not the art) anyhow.

just watched Fritz Lang's "M".

Basically the ABC of filmmaking~~, if you leave out editing for Eisenstein~~.
Amazing photography, impressive actors within a screenplay, that bursts with suspense and ethical cross references. 110 minutes so rich of intellect, you could certainly do a PhD about it. anno 1931!

Revl9n are the mysterious musical missing link between Gina X, Early Madonna, Abba, Peaches, The Slits, Human League, In The Garden-era Eurythmics, the dfa, Gary Numan, Buffalo Girls, Glass Candy & Joan Jett, all uniquely spliced into a fantasy world of Agent Provocateur underwear, dark defiance, twisted humour, sonic bondage and lusty pop voyeurism that see’s them forging a distinct and dangerous new sound for 2006.

Leaving out the Agent Provocateur part this fits about every hot, different, new band between Berlin and New York at the moment. And reading this introduction the way it's written, definetly not my type of ish.
Luckily I stumbled over them via a great, great Simian Mobile Disco remix of "Walking Machine" (stream via turntablelab) . On the b-side of the same 12" another mix by Sebastian, also decent.

Anyway, the Simian Mobile Disco stuff (they also released on Kitsuné in the past) is definetly worth your time. Headbangin'.

just found a very interesting Biggie post.
Quality material from the best Rapper ~~of all times~~ of the Nineties, i.e. when hiphop had officially reached pop status.

First an unreleased "Me & My bitch" original mix from the Ready to Die advance.
Here, including a very nice Minnie Ripperton sample (from "Take a little trip").

Then some flash art. And the conclusion that typo and dope lyrics fit pretty well. More of that!
